Humility
(The Shore)

A few years ago, one of us was on a sailing boat with friends. ‘As we were sailing back towards the coast, I said, “I can smell the sea!”. They looked at me smiling and said, “For those of us out at sea that’s the smell of the land!”

We both smelled exactly the same scent, but it meant completely different things to each of us. Actually, we both smelled the shore, where land and sea meet.’

Being able to realise that our perceptions are limited by our experience in life, enables us to nurture the humility of being open to other views and especially, to appreciate that mostly we simply don’t know.

Being able to say to yourself ‘I don’t know’, when facing the vast unknown of living a life in this part of the universe, is a great freedom; ‘offer your deeper core, now you can be the shore’.
